About us

We are Cultius Gaxas, a family business that's made up of our father, Jordi Gaxas, who is 75 years old, my brother Xavier, aged 47, and me, Jordi, aged 49. My brother and I are the first generation of the family to dedicate ourselves 100% to producing ornamental plants. In my grandfather's time vegetables were grown, and my father, instead of switching from vegetables to cut flowers, switched to potted plants. Our potted plants have always been marketed through @Corma, Cooperativa de Plantas Ornamentales del Maresme (Maresme Ornamental Plant Cooperative), Barcelona.

The nursery is located between the municipalities of Premià de Dalt and Vilassar de Mar, and covers an area of three and a half hectares. We mainly grow flowering plants: Osteospermum, Pelargonium, and Felicia. Additionally, we have summer flowering plants (Pentas Platycodon and Crossandra), poinsettia for Christmas, and for the past three years we have also been producing succulents and green plants.

Why did you decide to go into the family business?

The family home has always been on the farm itself. We have always lived here, and so this is what we have always been surrounded by. In the beginning, when we were children, my grandfather grew tomatoes, potatoes, lettuce – in other words, all vegetables. We later switched to the ornamental plant business, which we have been involved in since we were children, growing up alongside the business. For us, the business is part of our way of life.

We are passionate about this market. Seeing the whole process, from the cuttings, seeing them grow, transplanting, growth of the plant, and the final result. Achieving a good product that satisfies the end customer is very rewarding. You feel proud of your work on a personal level.

What was the
first thing you changed? Why?

When my brother and I took over the business, it was very clear to us that all the work was very physical, and what was clear was that we had to start mechanizing.

We first started to modernize the irrigation system, as there were no solenoid valves. This was essential to reduce working hours and give us more control over the crop. So, we began to implement automated irrigation systems, planting machines, then machines to transport the plant trolleys around the nursery. And we’ve continued to invent, well, modernize, in order to be more efficient and be able to produce a better product with less effort.

What advice would you give to others who are considering to join or take over the family business?

I would advise them that deciding to go into a family business in the ornamental sector has to be done with enthusiasm and passion, not only looking at the economic side, so to speak. Apart from the potential economic benefits, you have to remember that we are working with living material, and so we are contributing to creating nature and therefore increasing the green quota in the world, which nowadays is quite damaged. Economically, if things are done with enthusiasm and dedication, with a good business vision, viability and success will be achieved in the end.

What does the future hold?

Our dream is that people will become even more fond of having plants in their homes, because in the end having plants in your house is a way of bringing a bit of nature into your home. This obviously means we can continue to produce more and more plants, with the resulting economic returns, which is essential for continued growth, and to be able to maintain our family business.

We understand that a greener world influences people's values. The hope is that people will put the brakes on a bit, that it won't be all about technological growth, and we can live life in more natural environments than we do now.

We will also be facing challenges in the future, such as finding new varieties, creating new collections. We started mostly with flowering plants, and now we have a whole green plant and succulent collection, as part of a brand called @Crasascollection. We have an Instagram account and we hope that it will be a line of plants to grow at home. Green plants, succulent plants, which are low maintenance, decorative, beautiful, have low water consumption and are more sustainable. The hope, and at the same time the challenge, is that this project will be successful, and we will be able to fill everyone's homes with plants, bringing some greenery to their lives.
